Description of the work
Description of the work
The graphic work of the Belgian artist Pol Bury is characterized by a highly personal interpretation of extremely elegant and surreal metropolitan environments, where human presence is eliminated and architecture takes center stage. But the most significant element is the unexpected and extraordinary appearance of the sphere, the central element of Bury's research and a recurring feature in his sculptural work. The sphere interacts with metropolitan architecture and influences it. The sudden and unexpected presence of an enigmatic element such as the sphere in a plausible spatiotemporal setting creates a sense of estrangement that allows us to define this work as assimilable to a metaphysical aesthetic.
The screen print is part of a series of prints in which the artist Pol Bury relates the architecture of Paris to the sphere. While the appearance of the sphere in an urban landscape places this work within the realm of metaphysics on an aesthetic level, a deeper conceptual analysis of the presence of the geometric solid reveals its connection to Bury's research into kinetic art. Pol Bury's sculptures are always in search of perpetual motion, which is why the spherical element is fundamental, as it generates unstoppable forces and dynamics. The same is true of the metropolitan landscape, as the appearance of the sphere introduces a radiation of forces and continuous dynamic vibrations into the geometric rigidity of the obelisk. The graphic work created by the artist is aimed precisely at capturing and enhancing these forces and movements, in perfect parallelism with the Belgian artist's sculptural work.
Pol Bury was born in Belgium in 1922 and passed away in 2005. He was primarily a sculptor, but he began his artistic career as a painter in the Jeune Peintre Belge and COBRA groups. In 1953, he abandoned painting for kinetic sculpture, which led him to create installations that could be moved by the public or by electric motors. Among his most famous works is the sculpture-fountain L'Octagon, located in San Francisco. He also worked as a playwright. Since the 1960s, he lived mainly in Paris.
