Description of the work
Description of the work
The “Still Life” genre emerged at the beginning of the 17th century. It consists of depicting compositions of inanimate subjects, in most cases flowers or fruit. While at the beginning of its history it provided painters with an opportunity to create a naturalistic or photographic reproduction of reality, in contemporary art “Still Life” also becomes a way of interpreting reality. Indeed, as will happen, for example, in Cubist avant-garde or in the work of Giorgio Morandi, the profound exploration of objects will culminate in a conceptual representation that goes beyond mere sensory perception.
Pierre Morand’s aim is to provide a simplified interpretation of reality, seeking new values of purity in representation. For this reason, his approach can be defined as naive, yet it unfolds through a very classical and traditional painting style. His language is, in fact, essentially figurative and finds its fullest expression in the traditional genres of landscape painting or still life. However, the artist manages to infuse the tradition with his originality and personal touch, precisely through that search for purity in representation that shapes his style. More concretely, all this is expressed in a fluid technique that resolves the subjects with a few quick but incisive strokes. The objects almost dematerialize in the lightness of the glazes. From a chromatic point of view as well, the artist favors decidedly light, luminous tones.
Both in his choice of subjects and in his method of execution, we can say that Pierre Morand works within the realm of classical, figurative art while displaying a certain naive approach in composing his works. His desire to seek lightness and simplicity in representation is evident, with the aim of imbuing the work of art with primordial values of purity and innocence.
