A noble animal, a symbol of beauty and harmony, the horse has repeatedly been a prominent subject in the history of art. Since the fourteenth century, its presence has always been obligatory in battle scenes and equestrian monuments, and painters have always struggled to depict it with anatomical precision and naturalistic rendering.

In this work, painter Antonio Semeraro displays a certain affinity with a post-Impressionist style. The horse stands out at the center of a composition with a shallow depth of field. The perception of form and space is left entirely to the painter, who, with broad brushstrokes that leave thick, textured touches on the panel, defines the essence of the depicted subject, transcending its phenomenological reality. The image appears grainy; rather than a tangible presence, it almost seems as if it has been recomposed in memory.

Piero Semeraro was born in Trieste in 1914. He worked for many years in Pisa with the Il Navicello gallery and was closely associated with the Livorno art scene. His career is closely linked to that of the Livorno painter Gino Romiti.
