Description of the work
Description of the work
Landscape has always been a central theme in artistic research, both as a setting, as a backdrop, and as a subject itself. The naturalistic depiction of landscape has been a constant aspiration for painters. Each historical period has offered its own interpretation of landscape, contributing to the evolution of its depiction: first with an exploration of space, through Brunelleschi's perspective in the early Renaissance; then with atmospheric rendering in the 16th century; up until the depiction of every single vibration of light on objects in Impressionism. The "seascape" in particular is a recurring theme among artists. First, for the lyricism implicit in views overlooking the sea or in romantic images of small harbors. Second, because the depiction of aquatic surfaces allows painters to give free rein to their chromatic flair, thanks to refined interplays of reflections and reverberations.
Pierbrì's style is distinguished by a delicate balance between naturalism and expressive representation. He certainly begins by recording sensory data, but transfigures it into his intimate and subjective interpretation. Thus, we can see how his views undergo a process of pictorial synthesis that delicately abstracts their form. Objects are emptied of their materiality to give life to a substance composed essentially of color. And we can rightly speak of "giving life," because Pierbrì's pictorial layering is extremely complex and dynamic, imbuing his subjects with profound vibrations that are not only atmospheric but also spiritual. This is also confirmed by the painter's palette, whose choices do not entirely reflect the naturalistic element. Pierbrì's colors, in fact, have an emotional value and reflect the artist's subjective vision.
Pierbrì is the pseudonym of Pietro Brignoli, an artist born in Bergamo in 1926 and who passed away in 1999. A popular figure in his hometown, Pierbrì's life was marked by many hardships and the expedients he employed to overcome them. From being a tourist guide, he moved on to selling underwear from a motorcycle, and then ended up competing in actual races under the nickname "Flying Suitcase." During his youth, Pietro Brignoli also developed a passion for painting. He took the pseudonym Pierbrì and began painting seascapes and landscapes. As he himself recounted, in Cortina, he met Peggy Guggenheim, who bought four of his works.
