Description of the work
Description of the work
Landscape has always played a leading role in artistic research, both as a setting and a backdrop, but also as a subject in its own right. The naturalistic description of landscape has been one of the greatest aspirations for artists of every era. Each historical period has given its own interpretation of landscape, contributing to the evolution of its description: first with a search for space, through Brunelleschian perspective in the early Renaissance; then with the rendering of atmosphere in the sixteenth century; and finally with the representation of every single vibration of light on objects in Impressionism.
The style of the artist Pierbrì is distinguished by a delicate balance between naturalism and expressionism in representation. He is an artist who certainly starts from the recording of sensory data but transfigures them in his intimate and subjective interpretation. Thus we can see how his views are subjected to a certain process of pictorial synthesis that delicately abstracts their form. The objects are as if emptied of their materiality to give life to a substance made essentially of color. And we can rightly speak of “giving life,” because Pierbrì’s pictorial application is extremely complex and dynamic and endows the subjects with profound vibrations that are not only atmospheric but also spiritual. This is also confirmed by the painter’s palette, whose choices do not entirely reflect naturalistic data. Pierbrì’s colors, in fact, have an emotional value and reflect the artist’s subjective vision.
Pierbrì is the pseudonym of Pietro Brignoli, an artist born in Bergamo in 1926 and who passed away in 1999. A popular figure in his city, Pierbrì had a life marked by many difficulties and by the expedients he devised to overcome them. From being a guide for tourists, he moved on to selling underwear from the seat of a motorcycle, and finally ended up competing in actual races under the nickname “Valigia Volante” (Flying Suitcase). During his youth, Pietro Brignoli also developed a passion for painting. He adopted the pseudonym Pierbrì and began painting his seascapes and landscapes. As he himself recounted, in Cortina he met Peggy Guggenheim, who bought four of his works.
