Description of the work
Description of the work
The subject of the equestrian monument, or the man on horseback, has very ancient origins. It dates back to the classical world, the earliest example of which is the "Rampin Knight," and it had a fundamental political importance for Roman art. Generally, these are sculptures in the round, but there are also cases where this subject appears on painted supports. The theme of the man on horseback has pervaded the entire history of art, not only Western art, and has become a subject of research for contemporary artists such as Marino Marini, Arturo Martini, and Aligi Sassu.
In this bas-relief, artist Pericle Fazzini creates a work of great classical scope. We see how the sculptor, within a narrow circular space, manages to exalt form and movement in a naturalistic manner. We note, first and foremost, a pronounced plasticity that highlights the subject's clear volumes. Furthermore, the sculpture expresses great dynamic energy, thanks to the composition constructed on multiple directions and the highly pictorial treatment of the background space.
Pericle Fazzini was born in Grottammare in 1913. His entire career was spent in Rome, where he passed away in 1987. He trained at the Scuola Libera del Nudo. His first major commission came in 1931, when he won a competition to create a monument to Cardinal Dusmet. In 1938, he opened his studio on Via Margutta, where he would remain for the rest of his life. He participated in the Rome Quadrennial and the Venice Biennale. His sculptures are held in important national and international collections, including the Hakone Open Air Museum in Japan, the Peggy Guggenheim Collection in Venice, the Tate Gallery in London, the Galleria Nazionale d'Arte Moderna in Rome, the Art Institute of Chicago, the Momat in Tokyo, and the Museum of Contemporary Art in Montreal.
