Paolo De Robertis - Landscape

Landscape has always played a leading role in artistic research, both as a setting and a backdrop, but also as a subject in its own right. Throughout the centuries, the naturalistic description of landscape has been an aspiration for artists. Each historical period has offered its own interpretation of landscape, contributing to the evolution of its depiction: first through an exploration of space using Brunelleschian perspective in the early Renaissance, then through the rendering of atmosphere in the sixteenth century, and finally in Impressionism with the representation of every individual vibration of light on objects.

Paolo De Robertis is a painter with a classical conception of landscape painting. In this painting, however, he explores a freer and more creative pictorial language. The composition, structured around a wide view, derives its spatial depth primarily from the tonal values of color. The brushwork is vigorously concise, with color applied in patches and objects built up with quick, essential strokes. The entire scene is bathed in clear sunlight.

Paolo De Robertis was born in Naples in 1950, where he still lives and works. He remains one of the leading figures in contemporary landscape painting. He graduated from the Istituto d'Arte and draws inspiration from the masters of Neapolitan Vedutismo. In his technique, this translates into an abundant use of color relative to drawing in the composition of his works.
