Gradina Landscape

The work entitled “Paesaggio Gradina” was created during the Gradina extempore, organized by the cultural association EDAS “Mazzini” of Monfalcone.

The painting is characterized by the typical stylistic example of the series to which it belongs: a self-portrait in which only my silhouette is visible, devoid of features, used as a symbolic container of the landscape. The figure emerges on a uniform background with cold and neutral tones, which accentuates the contrast with the internal colors and guides the viewer's attention towards the inside of the silhouette.

Inside the silhouette is represented the karst landscape, which includes the white rocky walls, clearly attributable to the presence of limestone, a distinctive element of the Gradina area. The rocky surfaces are rendered with vertical and textured brushstrokes, which suggest the solidity and natural stratification of the stone.

The red shrubs, distributed along the green slopes, are a clear reference to sommacco, a characteristic plant of the karst territory, particularly visible and evocative in the autumn months, when it takes on its most intense shades.

The autumn season is further evoked by the depiction of mushrooms in the lower part of the composition, painted with round shapes and earthy colors, and by the presence of chestnuts, elements that recall the natural, cyclical, and seasonal dimension of the landscape. These details contribute to creating a direct link between the work and the sensory experience of the place.

The idea behind this work was to create a mini-series within the “Extempore” series, of which the work is part, developing several works dedicated to the various seasons, each capable of telling the landscape where I would find myself painting through its chromatic, atmospheric, and symbolic transformations.
