Description of the work
Description of the work
The painting can be defined as a genre scene, that is, the representation of an episode of everyday life that, apparently, has no significant elements. This type of domestic subject matter was long considered minor and only began to spread in Western art from the seventeenth century onwards. It was only with the development of nineteenth-century realist movements that everyday subjects were considered to be of the same importance as historical or religious ones. The Russian-born painter Orlow specialized precisely in producing genre scenes inspired by a romantic and nostalgic vision of life in his native country.
Given the spontaneity and freshness of the subject, an anecdotal scene taken from everyday life, Orlow always tries to maintain the same immediacy in his execution. Although the work is generally extremely figurative in character, the graphic execution, defined by short and quick brushstrokes, emphasizes the immediate nature of the episode. Orlow's style has the same freshness and liveliness as an illustration, full of curious details, with the execution quality of a work of art.
Orlow is a Russian-born painter. He is essentially a figurative painter, dedicated to the representation of romantic subjects, scenes taken from everyday life, or more adventurous types. Orlow tends to enliven his works with an impressionistic technique that transfers the spontaneity of his subjects into a formal style full of freshness and immediacy.
