Description of the work
Description of the work
Flowers as an independent subject begin to appear in “still lifes,” a genre that sees the light at the beginning of the 17th century. Later, painters’ interest in the floral world, especially with the Impressionists, grows ever greater, as it provides an extraordinary opportunity to capture chromatic and luminous vibrations. Thus, flowers are depicted not only in vases, but also immersed in their natural landscape. If at the beginning of its history it was a pretext for painters to attempt a photographic reproduction of reality, with contemporary art the subject of flowers also becomes a way of interpreting reality.
Both in the choice of subject and in the method of execution, we can say that the execution of this painting shows us a certain naïve attitude on the part of the artist. The desire to seek an infantilism in the representation is evident, with the aim of imbuing the work of art with primordial values of purity and innocence. Novella Parigini’s aim is to provide a simplified interpretation of reality, in search of new values of purity in representation. This is all expressed in a loose technique that resolves the subjects with a few strokes, quick but incisive, of chalk or pastel. The use of this particular technique gives the figures an immaterial consistency, almost as if they were vaporous and ephemeral apparitions. The use of the black background also contributes to achieving this effect, on which the chromatic nuances of the charcoal stand out more, consequently accentuating the fusion between the subject and the space in which it interacts.
The figure of Novella Parigini (1921-1993) clearly deviates from the conventional figure of the naïve artist, who is usually a person who is not a protagonist in social life, if not even marginalized. Parigini’s life, on the other hand, is distinguished precisely by the worldly nature of her experiences in both Rome and Paris. Her search for pure and simple formal values in her artistic path should therefore be interpreted in this sense. First of all, hedonism comes into play, typical of the Sienese aristocracy from which Parigini descended, so that painting itself becomes a game, a playful exercise to be practiced with a refined and fascinating infantilism. But art, for Parigini, is also the mirror of her free life, outside of any scheme: hence the desire to pursue pure aesthetic canons that break any link with the past.
