Description of the work
Description of the work
The work draws on an Informal aesthetic language. The devastation wrought by World War II left a profound mark on Western civilization, which in the visual arts also resulted in an inability to communicate. For some artists, this challenge led to a complete rejection of any visual language, resulting in the birth of Informal Art. The various Informal movements are certainly connected to American Abstract Expressionism, especially with regard to the gestural component, but they go further in their rejection of any figurative element, even geometric. Their research focuses instead on the material from which their works are composed.
This work is part of a series in which Nerone demonstrates his versatility as an artist, abandoning his more usual naive figurative style to instead embrace an informal language. The works in this group are the product of gestures pushed to their maximum potential and the expression of an irrepressible vitality. The paint is not only dripped, but thrown forcefully onto the canvas, encouraging the formation of biomorphic entities and material concretions on the surface of the work. The color palette, based on strong, almost violent hues, is also in keeping with this energy expressed in his artistic practice, undoubtedly effective in expressing an expressiveness taken to excess.
Nerone is the pseudonym of Sergio Terzi, an artist born in 1939 in Villarotta di Luzzara. He was also a sculptor, poet, and musician. Self-taught, he began painting around 1969. His inspiration was Antonio Ligabue, for whom he was chauffeur for several years. Nerone displays an artistic potential very similar to his master, offering a simplified and naive interpretation of reality characterized by great expressive potential.
