Description of the work
Description of the work
The work drew on an informal aesthetic language. The devastation brought about by the Second World War left a profound mark on Western civilization, which in the visual arts also manifested as an inability to communicate. For some artists, this problem resulted in a total rejection of any visual language, leading to the birth of Informalism. The various informal movements are certainly linked to American Abstract Expressionism, especially regarding the gestural component, but they go further in their rejection of any figurative element, even geometric ones. Their exploration is directed instead towards the material with which they compose their works.
The informal style of the artist N.C. Smith is fundamentally graphic. His canvases always take the form of a theory of symbols, elements of an unknown, enigmatic, and mysterious language. N.C. Smith's canvases have the appearance of artifacts from ancient civilizations, whose archaic quality is further emphasized by the use of raw jute canvas. In N.C. Smith's language, therefore, the principles of informalism, expressed through the use of a graphic alphabet, are combined with an aesthetics of the object—an artifact of industrial civilization—by repurposing a waste material from consumer society, such as jute canvas. Formally, all these elements come together in balanced compositions, both in the arrangement of the marks and in the carefully crafted color harmonies.
As we can see from his works, the artist N. C. Smith is distinguished by his development of an original graphic informal style, which also incorporates experimentation with unusual materials such as raw jute canvas.
