Landscape has always been a central theme in artistic research, both as a setting, as a backdrop, and as a subject itself. The naturalistic depiction of landscape has been an artist's aspiration throughout the centuries. Each historical period has offered its own interpretation of landscape, contributing to the evolution of its depiction: first with an exploration of space, through Brunelleschi's perspective in the early Renaissance, then with atmospheric rendering in the sixteenth century, up until the depiction of every single vibration of light on objects in Impressionism.

This work constitutes a sort of expressionist-surrealist landscape in which phenomenal reality is brutally synthesized, almost dissolved in color with Morelli's signature blue and purple hues. Its distinctive feature lies in the highly theatrical way in which the painter conceived the composition, with the more naturalistic backdrop of trees in the foreground opening onto the rarefied background, dissolved into the atmosphere.

Moreno Morelli was a Pisan painter born in 1930 and died in 1989. His artistic output focused primarily on landscapes, genre scenes, and still lifes. His pictorial style, highly synthetic and based on the application of dense, thick colors, shows a strong Post-Impressionist influence.
