Portraiture is, first and foremost, a description of the subject depicted, an attempt to capture their physiognomy and individual characteristics truthfully and naturally. With the progressive evolution of artistic research, the physiognomic description of the subject has also been accompanied by a psychological one. Therefore, over the centuries, portraiture has also become a means of introspective investigation of the subject, their character, and their state of mind. The processes of abstraction brought about by contemporary art have contributed to this type of investigation.

Edmondo Giuliani paints this portrait very quickly and concisely. He uses a thick black line that brings the forms to life and creates areas where the light, diluted color spreads. Even with limited formal means, the artist achieves a certain physiognomic precision and expressive power.

Edmondo Giuliani was a painter originally from Jesi, where he was born in 1915 and passed away in 2007. Essentially self-taught and a street painter, as he liked to call himself. A very popular figure in his hometown (of which he received honorary citizenship in 2000), he nevertheless exhibited his work in various shows in Italy and abroad. Only late in life did he attend painting courses at the Academy of Fine Arts in Macerata.
