Description of the work
Description of the work
Flowers as an independent subject begin to appear in “still lifes,” a genre that sees the light at the beginning of the 17th century. Later, painters’ interest in the floral world, especially with the Impressionists, grows ever greater, as it provides an extraordinary opportunity to capture chromatic and luminous vibrations. Thus, flowers are depicted not only in vases, but also immersed in their natural landscape. While at the beginning of its history it was a pretext for painters to attempt a photographic reproduction of reality, with contemporary art the subject of flowers also becomes a way of interpreting reality.
In this painting, Sante Monachesi reveals his connection with the historic French avant-gardes. The overall composition of the painting shows a great affinity with Matisse and Fauvism, due to the extreme synthesis of the subject and the predominance of strong, aggressive color tones. In fact, unlike other works, which are always abstract in form but nevertheless present a complex spatiality that refers to Cubism, in this work we instead notice an ostentatious two-dimensionality. There is a clear desire to recover primordial expressive means, with primary values, characterized by purity. For this reason, even the application of color eliminates any pictorial dynamics, unfolding in a perfect à plat.
Sante Monachesi was born in Macerata in 1910 and passed away in Rome in 1991. Together with Bruno Tano, he was one of the leading proponents of Futurism in the Marche region, founding the “Futurist Movement in the Marche” and the group “Umberto Boccioni, Futurists in the Marche.” His first solo exhibition was in Recanati in 1934: it was the beginning of an intense exhibition activity that would lead him to attend the Venice Biennale and the Rome Quadriennale several times.
