Description of the work
Description of the work
The work has a marked expressionist vocation, which tends to emphasize the expression of emotions. Expressionist art seeks to proclaim its moods to the world and flaunt them with passion. Formally, this translates into a summary rendering of the figures, through a very nervous and animated line, as well as the use of a violent color palette. These characteristics are found in the historical avant-garde movements of expressionism: Fauvism and the Die Brucke movement in Germany.
In this work, painter Milena Moriani interprets a female figure with a marked synthesis that reduces the subject almost to an icon devoid of any individual connotation. She achieves this through a textured painting style that extends in uniform areas across the canvas, unifying it with an earthy tone. The strokes are bold, angular, and coarse, heightening the figure's expressiveness, whose forms are resolved in an interplay of planes despite a highly two-dimensional context.
Milena Moriani, a painter born in 1934, lives and works in Asciano. She is a highly versatile artist, capable of moving from figurative to expressionist synthesis to abstraction. She loves experimenting and using a wide variety of techniques that allow her to unleash her creativity. She has exhibited paintings and sculptures in numerous solo and group shows in Italy and abroad; her works are held in public and private collections in Italy and in the USA, Brazil, Canada, France, Belgium, Germany, Switzerland, and Russia. She is a member of the National Museum of Women in the Arts.
