Description of the work
Description of the work
Portraiture is one of the most widespread artistic expressions, especially in painting, but also in sculpture, throughout all eras. Portraiture is, first and foremost, a description of the represented subject, an attempt to faithfully and naturally reproduce their physiognomy and individual characteristics. As artistic exploration gradually evolved, physiognomic description was accompanied by psychological exploration. Thus, over the centuries, portraiture has also become a means of introspective inquiry into the subject, their character, and their state of mind. The processes of abstraction introduced by contemporary art have further supported this type of inquiry.
Pietro Migneco’s style, in line with the artistic program developed by the “Corrente” group, draws inspiration from an expressionist language. Migneco achieves synthesis through a very thick line that outlines the figures and accentuates their physiognomic features. The figures in his works are therefore working-class men and women with very pronounced facial features. In this work, Migneco pushes even further toward formal synthesis. The subject is constructed with large, detached brushstrokes in a “negative” technique that gives life to a powerfully abstracted image.
Giuseppe Migneco, born in Messina in 1903, died in Milan in 1997. In 1937, he was one of the founders of the “Corrente” art group, which brought together several artists united by the common goal of rejecting Fascist conformism and opening up to European horizons. Their aim was to propose art with human, moral, and civic content. The entire group oriented itself toward a predominantly expressionist style.
