Description of the work
Description of the work
The “Still Life” genre emerged at the beginning of the 17th century. It consists of the representation of compositions of inanimate subjects, in most cases flowers or fruit. If at the beginning of its history it was an opportunity for painters to try their hand at a naturalistic or photographic reproduction of reality, with contemporary art “Still Life” also becomes a way of interpreting reality. Indeed, as will happen, for example, in the cubist avant-garde or in Giorgio Morandi, the profound research on objects will be aimed at a conceptual representation, taken beyond the simple sensory data.
Michele Toscano is an artist who generally follows a very classical and traditional line. In this still life, however, we can notice another side of his personality. Indeed, in this work the artist pursues a tangible and concrete realism through the expressive qualities of color. The composition is focused entirely on the objects, which are built entirely through the dense and corporeal pictorial matter. After the broad black stroke, which outlines the shapes schematically, follow brushstrokes full of luminous and atmospheric vibrations. There is a particular attention, we would almost say Cézanne-like, to the structure and form of the objects. The research on the real perception of the subject is also pursued through the choice of a range of brown colors.
The artist Michele Toscano was born in Alexandria, Egypt, in 1932. His pictorial production is distinguished by a very classical and traditional conception that unfolds especially in the creation of landscapes. His excellent technique, of certain academic training, relies above all on the expressive qualities of color.
