Description of the work
Description of the work
Surrealist aesthetics emerged around the 1920s and encompassed all fields of artistic research. Specifically, in the visual arts, Surrealism sought to explore the human subconscious and translate it into artwork through a mechanical writing process based on dream analysis. Consequently, Surrealist artworks propose the representation of a dreamlike dimension, completely dissociated from reality. However, this representation often relies on a hyperrealistic formal rendering, precisely to paradoxically accentuate the illusory and ambiguous nature of the surreal dimension.
In his surrealist work, Massimo Sansavini employs various artistic media. First and foremost, the essentially playful nature of his work is established, truly taking the form of a game. Thus, Sansavini chooses artistic media that evoke this playful dimension (cardboard, inlay, collage), almost as if seeking a childlike purity suited to the perceptual paths the artist seeks to trace in his works. Inlay and mosaic are indeed the techniques from which Sansavini draws, but tradition is transfigured into a magical and fantastical lens. Starting from this formal definition, Massimo Sansavini constructs his worlds of the impossible and the magical, where every element breaks the rules of space and time, but always with a strong dose of irony and sarcasm.
Massimo Sansavini was born in Forlì in 1961. He graduated from the "PL Nervi" art high school and subsequently from the "G. Severini" Mosaic Institute in Ravenna and the Academy of Fine Arts in Ravenna. His artistic foundation was formed in the early 1980s through study, research, and personal experience, focusing on the understanding and use of wood combined with lacquers and industrial resins. He began his artistic research with the use of mosaic. The use of wood as a mosaic tile is a clear reference to the Ravenna tradition as well as to past masters such as Giacomo Balla, Fortunato Depero, Enrico Baj, and Bruno Munari.
