Description of the work
Description of the work
The genre of street photography is fully realized in this photograph by Massimo Motta. The genre emerged from the need to capture everyday life in public spaces, where human interactions are also portrayed. The resulting style is dynamic and urban, revealing evolving social dynamics and the emotions that emerge in the photographs. Street photography makes extensive use of light, shadows, and composition, creating compelling artistic combinations. Ultimately, the photograph invites the viewer to stand before the image and reflect on the city and its frenetic nature. The pioneers of the genre were Henri Cartier-Bresson and Garry Winogrand.
In this photograph, Massimo Motta adopts an approach that emphasizes the breadth of the scene, capturing the entirety of Piazza Duomo and its architectural structures. The attention to depth of field suggests a desire to convey not only the sense of space but also the relationship between the various elements present. The choice of linear, well-balanced framing helps guide the viewer's gaze from the immediate foreground toward the architecture in the background.
A Milanese photographer, Massimo Motta graduated in biological sciences before pursuing photography as a self-taught student. In addition to being characterized by a strong spirit of inquiry influenced by science, his work focuses on a new kind of photography: hybrid photography, which blends painting and photography. In this latter form, he has consistently gone far beyond aesthetic effects, favoring rigor and unease in the realm of visual language while engaging with the challenges posed by technique, technology, and the history of photography, particularly that of Eadweard Muybridge. This has resulted in several photographic series, including Light and Night, in which he began developing new concepts for capturing the human figure—present but not directly observed. As the artist explains: “Painting is the material translation of my sensations; it is my inner reality emerging and manifesting itself alongside photographic reality. My themes concern the solitary individual turned inward, anthropocentric and globalized society, and the importance of our relationship with others, social bonds, and our existence within a web of life.”
