MASGALANO 2024

The MASGALANO is the award presented in the city of Siena to the Contrada whose Comparsa is judged to be the “best” in terms of elegance, dignity of bearing, and coordination during the historical processions that precede the Palio.
Historically, the Masgalano has requirements that must be met by the artist, both in form and iconography. It originated as a silver basin, later becoming increasingly similar to a plate and, more recently, to a sculpture.
The Masgalano created by Lara Androvandi combines a metal sculpture with a significant painted element featuring a hyperrealistic eye of a young Palio horse: a horse with a strong, proud, and curious gaze, ready to face its destiny.
But only gradually are the details of this work revealed, some more hidden than others, including the reflection of the entire profile of the city of Siena in the pupil, symbolizing this beloved animal’s connection to the Tuscan city and, therefore, to the Palio.
This work, created in gouache and graphite on a mosaic of Ebru paper, was once finished, first cut out and then high-resolution printed onto a specific sheet of silver-plated brass, thus becoming, as per the artist’s original design, the focal point of the sculpture.
It is, therefore, the original painting that gave life to the MASGALANO 2024.
