Description of the work
Description of the work
Landscape has always played a leading role in artistic research, both as a setting and a backdrop, but also as a subject in its own right. The naturalistic description of landscape has been one of the greatest aspirations for artists of every era. Each historical period has given its own interpretation of landscape, contributing to the evolution of its description: first with a research into space, through Brunelleschian perspective in the early Renaissance; then on the rendering of atmosphere in the Cinquecento; up to the representation of every single vibration of light on objects in Impressionism.
The work is very interesting as it constitutes one of the rare testimonies of landscape painting provided to us by the artist Edolo Masci. In his landscape painting, the Abruzzese artist seems to remain more tied to fidelity to sensory data compared to other iconographic subjects in which the process of synthesis and abstraction is higher. However, Masci's sense of color expressionism remains substantially unaltered, in which the synthesis of the subject is carried out essentially by means of the pictorial application, an almost gestural and very tormented application. Consequently, even the sense of nature and landscape have for Edolo Masci a strongly existentialist connotation. The figures are found crushed in an almost two-dimensional space and a frenetic hatching builds uncertain, indefinite forms. The space results closed by a dense pictorial matter. Thus, even the palette of Edolo Masci does not leave a glimpse of light openings but encloses the represented portion of the world in an opaque dimension and with livid reflections that are the representation of existential vibrations.
Edolo Masci was born in Castiglione a Casauria in 1938 and passed away in Rome in 2008. His fame is linked above all to the cliché-verre printing technique. His career developed in Rome where Masci attended Mino Maccari, Libero De Libero, Rafael Alberti. He exhibited his works in all the most important exhibitions in Lazio and, several times, at the Palazzo delle Esposizioni in Rome.
