Mario Russo - Multiples

The human figure has always been at the center of artistic research. Since the classical age, the naturalistic rendering of human anatomy has been a primary goal of painters and sculptors throughout history. The representation of the female figure is an expression of this aspiration, pervasive across all eras and stylistic trends. Indeed, in addition to the naturalistic interpretations of the Renaissance and various classicisms, which aimed for a truthful and detailed representation of the human body, the female figure has also been a central theme in the new aesthetic concepts brought about by the historical avant-garde, such as Cubism, Expressionism, and Surrealism. The female figure is the focus of this series of multiples by Mario Russo.

The series of multiples is a significant example of Mario Russo's artistic output. The female figure, one of his favorite subjects, is often paired with the citations that pervade his work. This series features floral motifs, but also features Greek sculpture, a key source of inspiration for this painter. The model of beauty embodied by Mario Russo's female figures is typical, identified as a bourgeois, elegant woman, often wearing a wide-brimmed hat. Formally, these multiples somewhat mirror the easel style employed by Mario Russo. His figures possess the precision and attention to detail typical of hyperrealist art, yet at the same time, the artist also indulges in more gestural layers, quivering with existential vibrations.

Mario Russo was born in Naples in 1925 and died in Rome in 2000. In 1948, he graduated from the Art Institute of Naples, and during his school years, formality took on a fundamental importance; in fact, his constant preoccupation was the human figure, which would become the focus of his paintings. In 1950, he moved to Rome and began participating in exhibitions in Italy and abroad. In 1953, he stayed in Paris, and in 1960, he had a solo exhibition in London. Another solo exhibition was held in Munich in 1965; three years later, in 1968, he held two exhibitions in New York. In 1992, he held a retrospective at the Museum of Rome. In 1994, he exhibited in Messina in an exhibition titled "Portrait of a Woman." In 1995, he was invited to the Biennale d'Arte dell'Urbano in Tolentino for a solo exhibition. In 1997, at the invitation of Alitalia, he held a solo exhibition at JFK Airport in New York. In 1998, his exhibition "Homage to Fellini" was held at the Palazzo Ducale in Mantua. In 1999, he held a solo exhibition entitled "Women" at the Galleria Ca' D'Oro in Rome.
