Description of the work
Description of the work
Saint Francis of Assisi is one of the most beloved figures in Christianity, known for his profound humility, respect for nature, and his preaching of poverty. Founder of the Franciscan Order, he renounced a life of ease to embrace poverty and simplicity. In art, Saint Francis is often depicted with stigmata, preaching to birds, or in moments of prayer. His image has inspired numerous artists, such as Giotto, who depicted his life in famous frescoes, symbolizing the ideal of purity and universal love. Stylistically, Mario Donizzetti's attention to detail is evident not only in his paintings but, in this case, also in his sculptures and bas-reliefs. The figure, of which we see only the head and neck and the hand caressing two birds, symbolizes nature. The sculptural mimesis introduces a sense of modernity and contemporaneity that also draws on the masters of the past. What emerges is not only a remarkable naturalness of execution but also a profound psychological synthesis of the human soul, transforming the figure of the saint into a man. Mario Donizetti is an Italian painter born in Bergamo in 1932. In addition to being recognized worldwide for his art, he also revolutionized painting by proposing new working methods such as his varnished and glazed egg tempera, his "encaustic," and his encaustic pastel. In 1977, he founded the "Centro di Ricerche Tecniche dell'Arte" (Center for Technical Research in Art) and in 2003 the "Donizetti Museo Scuola" (Donizetti Museum School). The artist also disseminates his techniques online with texts in various languages as well as filmed lessons dubbed in English. In 1983, he exhibited a retrospective of his work at the Pinacoteca Ambrosiana in Milan. His artistic versatility also extended to the field of music, creating a new method of notating music without the aid of the staff. His artistic career is also studded with awards, important exhibitions and permanent works such as the "Crucifix" in the Treasury Museum of St. Peter's Basilica in the Vatican, the frescoes and the altarpiece in the historic Basilica of Pontida and the portraits of great figures, some of which, such as that of Pope John Paul II now in the National Portrait Gallery in Washington, have been published on the cover of TIME Magazine.
