Description of the work
Description of the work
In art history, a clear distinction can often be made between figurative and abstract stylistic movements. However, when an artist’s aim is to represent an object that corresponds to phenomenal reality while simultaneously being imbued with hidden, symbolic meanings, this boundary can become blurred. In this work, Mario Ceroli adopts a Symbolist language to represent an Angel in commemoration of the Jubilee of 2000.
In this sculpture, Mario Ceroli plays with his own artistic language. The form that best represents him, the three-dimensional wooden silhouette, is translated into a different technique: lost-wax bronze casting. The sculpture was crafted as if it were made of wood, in order to achieve those primary values, close to Arte Povera, that lie at the heart of Ceroli’s artistic practice. Thus, the composition is powerfully symbolic in its essentiality, built upon harmonious curvilinear movements. We can recognize the greatness of the sculptor Mario Ceroli in his ability to imbue the figure with spiritual and dynamic tension at the same time, despite the simple and extremely minimalist lines that compose it.
Mario Ceroli was born in Castel Frentano in 1938. He is one of the most important contemporary artists and set designers. He studied in Rome under Leoncillo, Pericle Fazzini, and Ettore Colla. At the end of the 1950s, he discovered wood, which would become the preferred material of his artistic production. In the 1960s, fascinated by Pop aesthetics, he began producing the serial silhouettes that became his true trademark. In 1966, he was awarded at the Venice Biennale. In 1967 and 1968, he participated in Arte Povera exhibitions. He also had an intense career as a set designer, collaborating mainly with the Teatro Stabile di Torino.
