Mario Ceroli - Water

Mario Ceroli's work draws on several typical themes of contemporary art from the 1960s and 1970s. His artistic language, in fact, draws on what are commonly called "Poetics of the Object," through the use of wooden artifacts (which can sometimes also be simple everyday objects). Furthermore, the use of a handcrafted material, with such a raw and primitive aesthetic as wood, also draws Ceroli closer to the influences of Arte Povera. Finally, Pop Art must certainly be mentioned as a fundamental reference point in Ceroli's research, in its reinterpretation of certain types of mass-produced, serialized images and their redefinition in a new context through an artistic process.

This work clearly demonstrates many of Mario Ceroli's distinctive concepts. The central theme is a wooden letter; a simple object that could have come from a primer is taken and recontextualized as a work of art. Through this shift, the single letter of the alphabet is elevated almost as a mysterious symbol, a monogram with hidden meanings. Ceroli then plays with signifiers and meanings. From the monogram "A" emerges the word "WATER," written in block letters (a clear reference to advertising aesthetics), and at the same time, a flow of signs emerges, visually representing water with a gestural approach reminiscent of Abstract Expressionism. All of this demonstrates how, even in a simple graphic design, Ceroli manages to create a complex work that plays on multiple conceptual and communicative levels.

Mario Ceroli was born in Castel Frentano in 1938. He is one of the most important contemporary artists and set designers. He trained in Rome under Leoncillo, Pericle Fazzini, and Ettore Colla. In the late 1950s, he discovered wood, which would become his preferred material for artistic production. In the 1960s, fascinated by Pop art, he began producing the serialized silhouettes that became his trademark. In 1966, he won an award at the Venice Biennale. In 1967 and 1968, he participated in the Arte Povera exhibitions. He also worked extensively as a set designer, collaborating primarily with the Teatro Stabile di Torino.
