Description of the work
Description of the work
A painting can be defined as a genre scene, that is, the depiction of an episode of everyday life that, apparently, lacks any significant element. These types of domestic subjects were long considered minor and only began to spread in Western art starting in the 17th century. Only with the development of 19th-century realism did everyday subjects become considered equally important as historical or religious ones. The Impressionists, in particular, favored subjects related to modern life in urban, bourgeois settings. This is the starting point for artist Giuseppe Marchetta's interpretation of genre scenes and urban space. His paintings depict glimpses of the city of Rome, usually featuring carriages or other sparse signs of human presence in a fantastical, surreal atmosphere.
The style of Roman artist Giuseppe Marchetta manages to combine realism and surrealism in a highly personal fusion. The painter constantly seeks out glimpses of real life, episodes of everyday life, for his subjects. But the way in which these subjects are treated transcends into a dreamlike dimension. Marchetta's technique, to this end, consists of small touches of color, which simultaneously construct the objects but render them immaterial. Everything is lost in a decontextualized atmosphere, and the color palette is based on pastel hues. The confluence of all these elements in an excellent pictorial technique consistently creates, in Marchetta's works, a thick, foggy atmosphere, so dense that it can almost be felt. In it, the objects blend with extraordinary naturalness, standing out like apparitions with vague and undefined contours. Also remarkable in achieving this result is the tonal coherence of the entire painted surface, in this case based on a blue with a slight greenish hue.
Giuseppe Marchetta is a Roman painter who is part of the Via Margutta group. His entire output is characterized by real images, taken from the capital. These images, however, are treated in an immaterial manner thanks to the artist's distinctive brushstroke technique.
