Description of the work
Description of the work
Surrealist aesthetics emerged around the 1920s, encompassing all fields of artistic research. Specifically, in the visual arts, Surrealism sought to explore the human subconscious and translate it into artwork through a mechanical writing process based on dream analysis. Consequently, Surrealist artworks propose the representation of a dreamlike dimension, completely dissociated from reality. However, this representation often relies on a hyperrealistic formal rendering, precisely to paradoxically accentuate the illusory and ambiguous nature of the surreal dimension.
As can be seen from this painting, a prime example of the artist's oeuvre, Marcello Antonelli's surrealism has a very distinctive connotation. Indeed, the dreamlike dimension created by the Pesaro-born painter does not rely so much on the introduction of alienating elements. Everything that appears is ultimately plausible, even if the subjects express a sense of solitude and emptiness so profound that they cannot be considered realistic. Rather, it is the form that introduces us to a surreal dimension. Everything, in fact, is created with a cold, extremely objective, and therefore blatantly illusory plasticity. To this end, Antonelli employs a highly elaborate execution technique, both in his drawing and painting.
Marcello Antonelli was born in Pesaro in 1932 and passed away in 2009. From 1949, he worked as a decorator at Ceramiche Mengaroni, then moved to Milan, where he specialized in glass-ceramic art. After attending the Brera Academy, he exhibited at the Solferino Gallery. In the 1960s, he held a series of solo exhibitions in his hometown. In 1969, he held solo exhibitions in Padua and Venice. Other important exhibitions took place in 1972: Galleria La Cave in Treviso, Galleria Sistina in Rome, and Galleria dell'Azienda di Soggiorno in Iseo. He also exhibited his paintings abroad, in cities such as Paris, New York, Grenoble, and Cologne. He has received numerous national and international awards and recognitions.
