Description of the work
Description of the work
Landscape has always been a central theme in artistic research, both as a setting, as a backdrop, and as a subject itself. The naturalistic depiction of landscape has been an artist's aspiration throughout the centuries. Each historical period has offered its own interpretation of landscape, contributing to the evolution of its depiction: first with an exploration of space, through Brunelleschi's perspective in the early Renaissance, then with atmospheric rendering in the sixteenth century, up until the depiction of every single vibration of light on objects in Impressionism.
In this watercolor, painter Marc Sardelli demonstrates the refinement of his technique. This view, first and foremost, features a rational and orderly spatial conception based on a subtle atmospheric perspective. Tonally, the painting exhibits extraordinary unity, and spatial depth is perceived through subtle passages of light. A clear, sunny light illuminates the entire scene and highlights the clear volumes delineated by Sardelli. The watercolor technique gives the painting a suffused painterly quality that makes the scene seem more immediate and natural.
Marc Sardelli was born in Livorno in 1930 and trained at the Academy of Fine Arts in Florence. His first solo exhibition was held in 1955, followed by exhibitions both domestically and internationally. From the mid-1980s, he began producing cartoons for the newspaper Il Tirreno. Between 1975 and 1986, he was director of the Academy of Fine Arts in Livorno and president of the Rotonda Prize. His oeuvre includes many works inspired by the Napoleonic period and he was awarded the title of official painter of the Italian Navy.
