Description of the work
Description of the work
The work draws on an Informal aesthetic language. The devastation wrought by the Second World War left a profound mark on Western civilization, which in the visual arts also resulted in an inability to communicate. For some artists, this challenge resulted in a total rejection of any visual language, which resulted in the birth of Informal Art. The various Informal movements are certainly connected to American Abstract Expressionism, especially with regard to the gestural component, but they go further in their rejection of any figurative element, even geometric. Their research focuses instead on the material from which their works are composed.
Artist Manuela Sorrentino's informal language draws inspiration from the observation of the heavens, her fascination with astronomy, and the movement of galaxies. This attraction is translated into images by the painter, basing her compositions on a search for harmony. Thus, the painting's surface becomes a balanced field of color divided by rational, almost geometric principles. This composition, however, is not static, as the artist's complex, multifaceted, and material approach lends dynamism to the work.
Manuela Sorrentino is a Roman artist. A science and mathematics teacher, she approached painting as a self-taught artist, achieving remarkable technique, especially in portraiture (she even painted a portrait for Rita Levi Montalcini). Much of her work focuses on the nautilus, the spiral shell that inspired the classical golden ratio. Since 1997, she has been engaged in a significant artistic career, participating in numerous exhibitions and shows, receiving critical and public acclaim.
