Description of the work
Description of the work
The human figure has always been at the center of artistic research. Since the classical age, the naturalistic rendering of human anatomy has been a primary goal of painters and sculptors throughout history. The representation of the nude is the highest expression of this aspiration, pervasive across all eras and stylistic trends. Indeed, in addition to the naturalistic interpretations of the Renaissance and various classicisms, which aimed for a truthful and detailed representation of the human body, the nude has also been a central theme in the new aesthetic concepts brought about by the historical avant-garde movements, such as Cubism, Expressionism, and Surrealism.
In this sculpture, Manuel Campus, unlike his paintings, draws on a classical and traditional conception of artistic creation. As we can see in this work, the sculptor pursues a completely naturalistic rendering, which he achieves through his remarkable technique. The artist manages to emphasize the subject's volumes, creating a balanced relationship within the work. The physiognomy is highly precise, with a certain idealization, contrasting with the expressionistic realism he offers in his paintings.
Manuel Campus is an artist of Sardinian origin, born in Domus De Maria in 1928, but lives and works in Bazzano Inferiore, near Spoleto. He established himself as an artist from a young age, including in ceramics; he directed the Piediluco Ceramics School and the Rieti Art Institute. Many of his works have been acquired by important national and international museums, as well as by banks and religious institutions, hospitals, municipalities, prefectures, and private collections. From 1951 to 2004, he held numerous solo exhibitions in Italy and abroad. He has received numerous awards, honorary citizenships, and recognitions. Among others, in 1991, on the occasion of the 23rd edition of the "Golden Saint Valentine" International Award, the Committee for the Award of a Message of Love named him an honorary member of the Valentinian Academy.
