Manlio Sarra - The Lake

Manlio Sarra's work presents a water landscape characterized by a clear compositional division. The central part is dominated by the expanse of the body of water, rendered in cool and deep tones. The background is marked by the dark mass of vegetation, which creates a strong chromatic and structural contrast. The central figurative element consists of a small boat with two figures, enclosed in the vast natural environment. The foreground is resolved with textured brushstrokes and the use of warm tones such as ochre and browns, which visually anchor the entire composition.

Sarra's style is synthetic and lively, based on the use of painterly texture and a fast, structured brushstroke that builds the image through chromatic masses. The palette is based on cool and intense contrasts (petrol green, dark blue) for the natural elements, illuminated by warm accents. This approach is direct and essential, avoiding any form of detailed description to focus on the expressive effectiveness of the whole.

Manlio Sarra (1909–1986) is an artist well-positioned in the Italian post-war context. His importance is confirmed by his participation in major exhibitions such as the XXVIII Venice Biennale and all the Roman Quadrennials between 1947 and 1965. This constant presence attests to his official role. Sarra is known for his landscapes and for his activity as a portraitist of prominent figures. His work has also been exhibited internationally, confirming a relevance that goes beyond the national context.
