Description of the work
Description of the work
The work is an abstract composition. "Abstract" derives from the Latin term "abstrahere," which means to extract or draw out. The process of abstraction, in fact, consists of eliminating the particular and individual aspects of an object to derive a universal concept. From Kandinsky to Mondrian, from Pollock to Mirò, many painters have pushed the process of abstraction to the limit in their works, paradoxically creating pure forms and pure colors that do not exist in nature, or translating their emotions and instincts into images.
In this painting, the artist Mafonso clearly leans toward an abstract language with almost no reference to phenomenal reality, except for the figure indicated by the profile of a few thin lines. Throughout the painting, there is a strong desire to assert a symbolic meaning, likely with some reference to an archaic and primitivist aesthetic inspired by the engravings of some ancient civilization. In this sense, the work should be connected to an informal context, precisely because of its hermeticism and its ostentatious incommunicability.
Alfonso Marino, known by his stage name Mafonso, was born in Frattaminore in 1948. Initially, his work moved in the direction of an informal language, later drawing inspiration from the Transavanguardia movement. Mafonso has divided his work into distinct pictorial cycles such as Prime nevi sul dopo 2000 (1983), Make-Make (1988-90), Nevicate acide (1993-97), and Cloni (1998-2002). He has participated in numerous exhibitions and events throughout Europe, including a solo show at Art Basel in 1985. Between 1994 and 1998, he exhibited at Miart in Milan and Artissima in Turin. In 1990, he published the book Makè Makè, which was exhibited at the Centre Pompidou in Paris. He was one of the founders of the Cosa Mentale group in 1979.
