Description of the work
Description of the work
The iconography of maternity is linked to the subject of the Madonna and Child. It is probably one of the most popular iconographies in the entire history of art, both Western and Eastern. The Madonna and Child appears from the very beginnings of medieval painting and remains a constant subject as long as religious themes were prevalent in artistic production (that is, until the 19th century when themes inspired by everyday life began to be introduced).
The work interprets the subject of the Madonna and Child with a very classicizing spirit. The artist, in fact, conceives the work according to the values of harmony and balance typical of the Italian tradition. This inspiration in classicism, in Renaissance values, can also be deduced from the way in which the artist seeks a monumentality in his figure and an exaltation of the volumes. There is a precise reference to the more mature phase of the Renaissance, to Raphael's Madonnas, or even to the recovery of seventeenth-century classicism carried out, for example, by the Carracci or Guido Reni. The classical conception of the work can be observed not only in the exaltation of monumental volumes, but also in their arrangement in a pyramidal structure. The construction of the image is based on an idealized naturalistic rendering and the technical quality of the painter can be appreciated in the complexity of the drapery and the softness of the flesh tones pervaded by a light chiaroscuro. From a chromatic point of view, the palette used by the artist is based on very dark tones inspired by a seventeenth-century pictorial conception, as is the scenographic manner of bringing out, through light, the images from the dark background.
From the execution of this painting we can see how the artist who created this work is a painter endowed with an excellent technical training. Thanks to his pictorial quality, he manages to offer an artistic production inspired by Italian Renaissance and classicist painting.
