Description of the work
Description of the work
Portraiture is one of the most widespread artistic expressions, especially in painting, but also in sculpture, throughout all eras. Above all, a portrait is a description of the represented subject, an attempt to faithfully and naturally capture their features and individual characteristics. As artistic exploration gradually evolved, the physiognomic description of the subject was accompanied by a psychological one. Thus, over the centuries, portraiture has also become a means of introspective inquiry into the subject, their character, and their state of mind. The processes of abstraction introduced by contemporary art have further supported this type of inquiry.
The work is an example of the numerous pieces in which Mino Maccari portrays women's faces. In this context, Maccari abandons the ironic and almost surreal distortions that distinguish him, essentially walking the line between realism and expressionism. The image is rendered with extreme naturalness, just as it is, without particular subjective filters. At the same time, however, reality is manipulated by the artist, who simplifies it to the utmost. There is a remarkable formal synthesis that makes the image iconic and, therefore, more expressive. The line vibrates with existentialism, and the large eyes open up into the depths of the soul. Color, too, obviously takes on a more expressionistic than natural significance.
Mino Maccari was born in Siena in 1898 and passed away in Rome in 1989. A multifaceted figure in the landscape of Italian culture, he was a writer, painter, and journalist. His artistic career developed especially after the Second World War. In 1962, he was appointed president of the Accademia di San Luca, and a solo exhibition of his work was organized in New York. Mino Maccari left behind an extensive body of drawings, prints, and watercolors, always characterized by an expressionistic taste for vigorous drawing and a passionate pictorial interpretation.
