Description of the work
Description of the work
An emblematic figure in the Gospels, Saint Joseph, Mary's husband, is a recurring figure in Western art history. His depictions date back to the Middle Ages. Saint Joseph consistently appears in episodes from Jesus' childhood, but always as a marginal and modest figure (especially in traditional iconography of the Nativity). The oldest depiction of Saint Joseph as a saint in his own right is thought to be that by Taddeo Gaddi in Santa Croce, Florence, painted between 1332 and 1338. Saint Joseph is always depicted as a humble worker, often with carpenter's tools or the lily, a symbol of purity.
The style of the painter E.M. Grassi is based primarily on a solid drawing structure. Through a highly defined line, the painter first creates the framework of the work, in which a clear linear system emphasizes the volumes and plasticity of the subjects. The curved linear system of the folds of the garments also creates a compositional rhythm across the entire surface of the work. Grassi's pronounced plasticity is further enhanced by the uniform light that extends across the entire scene, but is softened by the soft pastel colors that are characteristic of this artist. Finally, an intimate and calm sentimentality that connects the characters in his paintings is always present in Grassi's paintings.
E.M. Grassi is a painter with a solid pictorial background, especially in the construction of the drawn structure of his works. His pictorial conception is linked to a consistent naturalistic rendering, although a certain degree of idealization is not lacking in his scenes, due to the desire to express sentiments consistent with Christian spirituality.
