Description of the work
Description of the work
The devastation brought by the Second World War left a deep mark on Western civilization that in the visual arts also resulted in an inability to communicate. For some artists, this problem culminated in a total rejection of any visual language, which translated into the birth of Informel. The various Informel movements are certainly linked to American Abstract Expressionism, especially regarding the gestural component, but they go further in their rejection of any figurative element, even geometric ones. Their research is instead directed towards the material with which they compose their works.
In his versatile research and multifaceted artistic production, Marcolino Gandini explored several expressive languages within the realms of abstraction and Informel. In the case of this painting, the artist reaches a peak of experimentation, decisively abandoning any connection with perceptible reality, creating a concrete work of pure abstraction. The work is entirely resolved through the artist's gesturality. Indeed, its surface is completely monochromatic, set in a neutral gray tone. The pictorial material, however, is dense and corporeal, allowing the artist to model the surface of the painting by manipulating and shaping it. In this way, a hermetic sign system is created, yet powerfully expressive in its incommunicability. All the more so, the aura of mystery is fueled by the hinted presence of the geometry of the circle and the line, which almost seem to trace a path, an attempt to rationalize and find one's way through that thicket of signs.
Marcolino Gandini is an artist born in Turin in 1937. From a young age, he attended Felice Casorati's studio and participated in exhibitions in the Turin art scene, debuting with a solo show at Palazzo Chiablese in 1958. In 1962, he exhibited at the Galleria Numeri in Rome, and solo shows continued throughout the 1970s and 1980s. In 1991, he held a comprehensive retrospective at the monumental complex of San Michele a Ripa. In 1995, he had a solo show at the Galleria Civica d’Arte Moderna in Turin. Marcolino Gandini works mainly between Turin, Rome, and Venice. In Rome, he participated in the atmosphere of the 1960s, exhibiting with Pascali, Ceroli, and Kounellis.
