Description of the work
Description of the work
The urban landscape was already a popular subject in the Middle Ages and the Modern Era, but predominantly in an idealized manner. Scenes of city life became typical themes with a more realistic interpretation starting in the 19th century. It is worth remembering that immediately following the realist movements of the 19th century, the Impressionists also placed great emphasis on the everyday, on everyday life, with a certain predilection, however, for the frenetic pace of the city, its crowds, traffic, and typically bourgeois settings. In his pictorial research, the artist Luigi Rocca achieved a highly elaborate definition of the urban landscape, particularly the metropolitan one.
Luigi Rocca's urban views are so complex that they simultaneously embody a distinct metropolitan realist spirit, perfectly blended with a decidedly existential connotation of urban space. What unites them all is the absolute formal and compositional purity that distinguishes this artist's works. The depiction of buildings generates, on the surface of the work, a system of lines, perfectly perpendicular intersections, and impeccable perspectives. Luigi Rocca's works are rational grids whose beauty lies in their perfection and the creation of a concrete space. However, Luigi Rocca tempers this rationality with a vibrant pictorial interpretation. His application of color is lively, dynamic, intended to lend a strong existential connotation to the architectural purity of metropolitan space.
Luigi Rocca was born in Porpetto in 1952. His career began with an exhibition at the Galleria Viotti in Turin in 1985, which established him as one of the leading exponents of Hyperrealism. In 1987, he began collaborating with the Galleria San Giorgio in Portofino. In 1998, he participated in the Art Expo in New York and other important exhibitions in the USA.
