Luciano Proverbio - Winter

The painting can be defined as a genre scene, that is, the depiction of an episode of everyday life that, apparently, lacks any significant element. These types of domestic subjects were long considered minor and only began to spread in Western art starting in the 17th century. Only with the development of 19th-century realism did everyday subjects become considered as important as historical or religious ones.

Luciano Proverbio's pictorial language constantly seeks to transfigure reality through creativity and imagination. Even this representation, while displaying a certain degree of realism, nevertheless presents some anti-naturalistic overtones. There is an almost naïve attitude that leads to the simplification of reality to achieve greater expressive force. Thus, the composition moves in a space that isn't entirely plausible and is constructed through compact masses. The application of color is dense and helps create a certain sense of suspension and anticipation.

Luciano Proverbio was born in Alessandria in 1936 and has always lived and worked in Turin. Since the 1960s, he has found his own stylistic path in a figurative language laden with symbolism and underlying meaning. In the 1970s, however, he shifted more toward the use of color and lines. Proverbio is also known for his graphic works, particularly the 1972 portfolio "The Woman and the Devil," which was exhibited in 1976 at the Jordan Museum of Modern Art, as well as in Tokyo and Paris.
