Description of the work
Description of the work
| In this work, the artist's intention was to quickly capture the navigation of three vessels at sea. This is a sketch taken from life, a moment of seafaring life in his native Viareggio that the artist wanted to immortalize on paper. It is likely a sketch, used by the painter to practice his hand and refine his technique. | ||

The work has all the character of a quick sketch taken from life, as evidenced by the essentiality and rapidity of the artist's strokes in outlining the scene. However, despite the composition's minimalism, one can appreciate the technique of a great master like Lorenzo Viani. The space, delineated with a single stroke to indicate the horizon, is occupied by the three boats, which the artist has carefully arranged. The subjects are depicted on the sheet using an impressionistic technique, thanks to which they come to life with just a few strokes. Note, in particular, how, with quick linear strokes, the painter has conveyed the play of shadows on the sails caressed by the wind.
