The series has a marked expressionist vocation, which tends to emphasize the expression of emotions. Expressionist art seeks to proclaim its moods to the world and flaunt them with passion. Formally, this translates into a summary rendering of the figures, through a very nervous and animated line, as well as the use of a violent color palette. These characteristics are found in the historical avant-garde movements of expressionism: Fauvism and the Die Brucke movement in Germany. This is a series of small portraits in which the formal medium of woodcut does not prevent Lorenzo Viani from expressing his expressionist style of popular inspiration. Viani's expressionism synthesizes the figures, yet still manages to give them a sort of physiognomic characterization. This is achieved through a line that explores the faces, delves into them, and defines them on a sensitive and emotional level. Lorenzo Viani, born in Viareggio in 1882, spent his childhood in the Viareggio docks, becoming accustomed to a maritime world of port people, simple folk, and the destitute. Throughout his career, the painter was drawn to the lives of the humble and socially excluded, leading him to develop a pared-down, raw, and strongly instinctive style of painting. His interest in the lower classes of society and the resulting pared-down style of painting link Lorenzo Viani's painting to an Expressionist foundation. However, he also developed his own style, drawing on a more popular approach. The works are as follows:
