Description of the work
Description of the work
Landscape has always played a leading role in artistic research, both as a setting and a backdrop, but also as a subject in its own right. The naturalistic description of landscape has been a constant aspiration for painters. Each historical period has offered its own interpretation of landscape, contributing to the evolution of its depiction: first through an exploration of space, using Brunelleschian perspective in the early Renaissance; then through the rendering of atmosphere in the sixteenth century; and finally, in Impressionism, with the representation of every individual vibration of light on objects. The seascape, in particular, is a highly
recurring theme among artists. First, because of the lyricism inherent in views overlooking the sea or romantic images of small harbors. Second, because the depiction of water surfaces allows painters to freely express their chromatic imagination through sophisticated plays of reflections and reverberations.
Lombardo's style is inspired by a naive conception of artistic creation, characterized by a simplification of subjects that is at once conscious and instinctive, with the aim of restoring the primal values of purity and simplicity to the representation. However, the artist's simplification of reality also incorporates several creative elements, evident in the complexity of the drawing and the chromatic exploration. We are thus faced with a refined use of color that is, in some ways, indebted to the Luminist group and painters such as Umberto Lilloni. In Lombardo's simplification and his light colors, we find the same desire to dematerialize tangible reality, lighten it, and transfigure it into an essential representation imbued with a minimalist lyricism.
There is no precise biographical information available regarding the artist Lombardo. Specializing primarily in landscapes, his style reveals a pronounced naive approach and a certain connection to the Luminist group. His desire to pursue a childlike quality in representation is evident, with the aim of imbuing the work of art with the primal values of purity and innocence.
