Description of the work
Description of the work
Portraiture is one of the most widespread artistic expressions, especially in painting, but also in sculpture, throughout all eras. Portraiture is, first and foremost, a description of the represented subject, an attempt to faithfully and naturally reproduce their features and individual characteristics. As artistic exploration gradually evolved, the physiognomic description of the subject was accompanied by a psychological one. Therefore, over the centuries, portraiture has also become a means of introspective inquiry into the subject, their character, and their state of mind. The processes of abstraction introduced by contemporary art have supported this type of inquiry.
The style of the painter Liberio Reggiani, in the majority of his works, is characterized by the development of a strongly expressionist language. The artist seeks to go beyond what is perceived by the senses to extract the true essence of reality and convey it on canvas in an agitated and dramatic manner. To this end, through the application of color, he develops a highly synthesized approach that reduces subjects to dense, textured layers of paint, in which the artist's own emotionality also takes center stage, conveyed through his raw gestural style. All these elements together constitute the expressive power of Liberio Reggiani's painting, which undoubtedly draws on the historical German avant-garde movements, such as the Die Brücke group. The angular images emerge almost with difficulty, establishing a struggle with the paint itself.
Liberio Reggiani (Nice, 1931). In 1959, he participated in the Rome Quadriennale. From an expressive point of view, his works are distinguished by a powerful, almost violent immediacy achieved through the use of bold, aggressive colors. He belongs to the "expressive realism" movement, and his works depict the tragedy of the human condition during the war in the decaying and ferocious environment of the metropolis. He thus embodies the philosophy of crisis in all its rawness.
