Description of the work
Description of the work
The language used in the works in question can be understood within the framework of naturalism. One of the most important concepts in the history of artistic production has been that of "mimesis," or the human need to imitate and reproduce nature, that which surrounds us. Nature refers to everything that can be grasped through the five senses—in short, phenomenal reality. Figurative and naturalistic trends in art can be considered those that, in the representation of the world, adhere most closely to this objective and sensorial dimension, leaving little room for abstraction and subjective interpretation.
A series of masterly works showcasing the masterful technique of artist Leonardo Pizzanelli. The figures are crafted with a warm manual skill that allows this painter to achieve a completely naturalistic rendering. Thus, the child's face is so detailed it almost reaches hyperrealism. Even the nudes exhibit a soft touch that makes the volumes both sculptural and soft. The forms are rendered with delicate, nuanced shading that makes the contours appear uncertain and more vivid.
Leonardo Pizzanelli (Torre del Lago 1920 - Florence 1984) was born into an artistic family (his father Ferruccio was also a painter) and trained in Florence, where he attended the Academy of Fine Arts. His first solo exhibition in Pisa was held in 1942 at the Palazzo alla Giornata; from 1943 to 1947, he frequented the Florentine art scene, which sparked his artistic flair, with landscapes and still lifes, figures, portraits, and nudes, in the typical twentieth-century vein. He then began visiting Paris, Canada, England, and Africa, where he founded and directed art schools.
