Leonardo Castellani - Untitled

The work depicts a natural landscape characterized by lush vegetation, trees, and shrubs that occupy much of the scene. Amidst the deep green, one or two houses emerge, almost hidden by nature. The distant perspective provides an overall view that conveys a sense of calm and harmony with the surrounding environment.

The color screen print faithfully reproduces an oil painting from 1934, highlighting the nuances and details of the original work. The style is distinguished by a meticulous realism in its rendering of contrasts and depth, with a balance of light and shadow that gives the image a harmonious atmosphere.

Born in Faenza to a family of cabinetmakers, the printmaker and painter qualified as a cabinetmaker and carver in 1914. He studied sculpture at the Florence Academy of Fine Arts, where he met Osvaldo Licini. After serving in the military (1915–1920), he attended the studio of sculptor Ettore Ferrari in Rome and became interested in Futurism. He returned to Cesena and opened a ceramics workshop, then moved to Venice, and finally taught decoration and ceramics in Fano. From 1930, he held a chair in printmaking in Urbino for 38 years. From 1928, he devoted himself to printmaking, preferring etching and drypoint, with a style that evolved toward a graphic lyricism recognizable in the post-war period. He produced about 800 prints, drawing inspiration from Fattori, Morandi, and Carrà. In 1957, he founded the magazine Valbona. He participated in numerous national and international exhibitions, including several Venice Biennials.
