Description of the work
Description of the work
Landscape has always played a leading role in artistic research, both as a setting and a background, but also as a subject in its own right. The naturalistic description of landscape has been one of the greatest aspirations of artists in every era. Each historical period has given its own interpretation of landscape, contributing to the evolution of its description: first with a study of space, through Brunelleschian perspective in the early Renaissance; then with the rendering of atmosphere in the sixteenth century; and finally with the representation of every single vibration of light on objects in Impressionism.
From the analysis of this work we can understand the artist Lello Barresi's conception of landscape painting. He maintains a connection with the description of sensory data, that which he sees and perceives through his senses, but everything is transfigured according to a rigorous compositional logic. Indeed, the artist reconstructs the sensible world not according to a naturalistic principle of imitation, but according to a geometric spirit. And thus even the picturesque corner, the small village of houses, is reduced to a precise system of vertical and horizontal lines. In this way, the volumes of the objects are outlined very clearly, with a striking sense of geometry on the part of the artist. In this rational attitude, everything appears static, in a kind of magical metaphysical immobility. As for the paint application, however, Lello Barresi goes somewhat against this organizing spirit of his. Indeed, his brushwork is extremely lively, full of atmospheric vibrations that lend freshness to the representation.
Lello M. Barresi was born in Palermo in 1932. An artist with an academic background, he was first a student of Carrà. For a decade he lived in Southeast Asia, where he taught Western art history and, on behalf of the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, performed diplomatic duties for the Italian Cultural Institute in Jakarta. From 1954, he devoted himself mainly to painting, initially focusing on composition and figuration. From 1970, the subject of his research became the female figure. He passed away in 2001.
