Description of the work
Description of the work
The devastation brought by the Second World War left a deep mark on Western civilization that, in the visual arts, also manifested as an inability to communicate. For some artists, this problem resulted in a total rejection of any visual language, leading to the birth of Informel. The various Informel movements are certainly linked to American Abstract Expressionism, especially regarding the gestural component, but they go further in their rejection of any figurative element, even geometric ones. Their research is instead directed towards the material with which they compose their works. Katia Rota's research
is also inspired by Informel poetics, although interpreted in a completely original way.
The style of the Trieste-based painter Katia Rota is based on a highly advanced process of synthesis that leads her to abstract phenomenal reality to the point of achieving results that can be attributed to the poetics of Informel. We can see this in these “Skyscrapers,” in which the artist, also through the title, leaves a trace for the viewer to maintain a reference to the subject, but the execution resolves completely into a powerfully expressionistic and abstract mode. The absolute protagonist is the painterly gesture, which, together with the dense color material, becomes the artist's main expressive means. Thus, the faint trace of tangible reality, which can still be identified in an almost elusive skyline, fully identifies with the painter's gesture, expressed in broad vertical brushstrokes. The same happens with the atmosphere and the reflections on the surface of the water: everything is transfigured into the expressive power of pure painterly material, thanks to the artist's ability to modulate it and make it chromatically dynamic.
Katia Rota is an artist who lives and works in Trieste. She has a long educational background, having graduated as an art historian and attended courses in painting techniques, mural painting restoration, and ceramics. In July 2003, she participated in the art exhibition “Estate in Galleria” at the Poliedro art gallery in Trieste, with the involvement of critic Sergio Brossi. In 2010 and 2011, with the cultural association “Artesette,” she exhibited at the Stazione Marittima in Trieste on the occasion of the Barcolana. In the spring of 2012 and in October of the same year, she was again on display in Trieste at “Sale Cornucopia Art.” She then exhibited in Ronchi dei Legionari between 2012 and 2013, before returning to Trieste with an exhibition in February 2013 at the Seven Art gallery. The artist continued her exhibition path by participating in events such as “Vele Marine” (Trieste, 2013) and “ArTi Art Show Room” (Gorizia, 2014), before exhibiting on the island of Ventotene in the summer of 2014 and in Milan in June 2015 at the “Federica Galli” foundation. A versatile artist capable of using a variety of techniques, her artistic production has turned especially towards an Informel and Abstract Expressionist aesthetic.
