Description of the work
Description of the work
José Guevara's works exhibit a marked Expressionist vocation, in that they tend to emphasize the expression of emotions. Expressionist art seeks to shout its moods to the world and display them passionately. Formally, this translates into a sketchy rendering of figures through a very nervous and dynamic line, as well as the use of a violent color palette. Such characteristics are found in the historical avant-gardes of Expressionism, such as Fauvism and the Die Brücke movement in Germany. As for José Guevara, his Expressionism is evident in the intense colorism of his canvases and the fluid forms that the subjects acquire through his unique combustion oil technique.
The work is an example of the more mature and accomplished production of the Spanish artist José Guevara. In his artistic language, he remains faithful to figuration, but the sensitive details are distorted in a decidedly Expressionist manner. José Guevara's Expressionism derives from profound experimentation with techniques and materials that led him to discover the process of burning pigments. All this fits perfectly within highly contemporary artistic demands, such as experimentation with new materials and the strong gestural component in the execution of the work (represented, precisely, by the combustion of the paint). From a more strictly formal and compositional point of view, this technical experimentation leads to an extreme synthesis of the figure. The subjects transform into patches that move across extremely bright backgrounds. Life takes origin, in a very evident way, from the strength and energy of heat, of fire. Furthermore, the way in which José Guevara uses the cracks caused by combustion for the purpose of composing the painting is highly expressive.
José Guevara was a Spanish painter, born in Puebla de Guzmán in 1928 and passed away in Huelva in 2010. Trained at the Academy of Fine Arts in Huelva, he began his career with figurative results in the oppressive atmosphere of Francoist Spain. Emigrating to South America for political reasons, he had the opportunity to come into contact with the pictorial avant-gardes of the “Arte Nuova” and “Non Figurativo” groups and, in 1953, discovered the technique of burning pigment. From 1958 onwards, he began to exhibit his works all over the world: France, the United States, Australia, Lebanon, Syria, Iraq, Germany, the Netherlands, England, Luxembourg, Panama, Iceland, Italy, and Japan. In 1962, he participated in the XXVI Venice Biennale as well as the Biennales of Paris, São Paulo, and Alexandria, and various annual Intercontinental Exhibitions. At the end of the 1970s, José Guevara moved to Italy, where he was nicknamed “Rosso Guevarino” because of the predominant color in his canvases.
