The devastation brought by the Second World War left a deep mark on Western civilization that, in the visual arts, also manifested as an inability to communicate. For some artists, this problem resulted in a total rejection of any visual language, leading to the birth of Informalism. The various informal movements are certainly linked to American Abstract Expressionism, especially regarding the gestural component, but they go further in their rejection of any figurative element, even geometric ones. Their research is instead directed towards the material with which they compose their works.

In his versatile research and multifaceted artistic production, Ivo Scaringi explored several expressive languages, from realistic to more conceptual ones. In the case of this painting, the artist reaches a peak of experimentation, decisively abandoning any contact with sensible reality, creating a concrete work of pure abstraction. Reality, indicated in the title of the work as a landscape, is translated into a mental image of the artist, which has no connection with phenomenal data and resolves completely into an informal aesthetic. The work is organized by Scaringi as a diptych in which the transfiguration of the landscape into an artistic gesture occurs in two different moments: two phases that reflect different ways the artist relates to nature. In the upper part, a complex decomposition of space prevails, which is divided into several sections, intersecting with each other, in which the expressive medium of the line prevails. A deep and compact blue dominates, which does not yield to painterly effects in the unconscious elaboration of a rural landscape, foliage, and grass. In the second part, the space simplifies and emptiness, waiting, prevails. Waiting that is resolved almost with an apparition, in the sudden opening of the luminous and warm orange.

Ivo Scaringi was an artist originally from Trani, born in 1937 and passed away in 1998. He trained at the Art Institute of Bari and subsequently embarked on a career as a teacher at the same institute until 1969 and, later, as a teacher of Art Education at the middle schools of Trani and Molfetta. He always practiced artistic activity, officially started in 1964 with his first solo exhibition at Vernice di Bari. In 1965 Ivo Scaringi joined the Nuova Puglia group, born with the purpose of attempting the expressive recovery of southern painting. The experience will continue in the 1970s with the Immaginazione e Realtà group. Scaringi, however, always followed his own personal path, free from the impositions of the market, which led him to experiment with different expressive forms. He was also an excellent draftsman, as shown by the works created for the poetry book “La bella sorte” by Maria Marcone and the covers for the periodical “Singolare/Plurale”.
