The devastation wrought by World War II left a profound mark on Western civilization, which in the visual arts also resulted in an inability to communicate. For some artists, this challenge led to a complete rejection of any visual language, which led to the birth of Informal Art. The various Informal movements are certainly connected to American Abstract Expressionism, especially with regard to the gestural component, but they go further in their rejection of any figurative element, even geometric. Their exploration focuses instead on the materials from which their works are composed.

In his versatile research and multifaceted artistic production, Ivo Scaringi has explored various expressive languages, from the realistic to the more conceptual. In this painting, the artist reaches a pinnacle of experimentation, decisively abandoning all contact with sensory reality, creating a concrete work of pure abstraction. Reality, referred to in the title as landscape, is translated into a mental image of the artist, which has no connection to phenomenal data and resolves entirely into an informal aesthetic. Scaringi organizes the work as a diptych in which the transfiguration of landscape into artistic gesture occurs in two distinct moments: two phases that reflect the artist's different ways of relating to nature. The upper section features a complex decomposition of space, which is divided into various intersecting sections, in which the expressive medium of line prevails. A deep, solid blue dominates, refusing to yield to pictorialism in the unconscious elaboration of a rural landscape of foliage and grass. In the second section, the space becomes simpler, and emptiness and expectation prevail. This expectation is resolved almost by an apparition, in the sudden opening of a bright, warm orange.
Ivo Scaringi was an artist originally from Trani, born in 1937 and passed away in 1998. He trained at the Art Institute of Bari and subsequently began a teaching career there until 1969, and subsequently as an art teacher at middle schools in Trani and Molfetta. He always pursued his artistic career, officially beginning in 1964 with his first solo exhibition at the Vernice in Bari. In 1965, Ivo Scaringi joined the Nuova Puglia group, founded with the aim of attempting to revive the expressive power of Southern Italian painting. This experience continued in the 1970s with the Immaginazione e Realtà group. Scaringi, however, always pursued his own personal path, free from market constraints, which led him to experiment with various expressive forms. He was also an excellent illustrator, as demonstrated by the works he created for Maria Marcone's book of poems “La bella sorte” and the covers for the periodical “Singolare/Plurale”.
