The Dream (Le Rêve)

The Dream depicts a sleeping woman with her arms folded and her head tilted to one side. Her face appears simultaneously in profile and from the front.

Looking closely at the upper part of the face, one can see the surrealist expression, the sexual content, and the intimate relationship with Marie-Thérèse Walter.

The sense of softness, evoked by the woman's rounded features, is accentuated by the curved lines of the red armchair on which she is seated. Probably inspired by the Fauvist painting of Henri Matisse and a departure from the monstrous figures of previous paintings, the painting evokes, as a whole, harmony and serenity.
